"Ink and Elkskin", a dramatic interpretation of the first official meeting between the Expedition and the Oto and Missouria tribes, will take place in Omaha's Elmwood Park July 31 - August 3 at 8:00 p.m. The event's producer, Jeffery Elwell, executive artistic director of the Nebraska Repertory Theatre, held auditions in Lincoln, New York and Chicago to recruit the 20-member cast. Five of the roles will be played by Native American actors.
The Nebraska Lewis and Clark Commission has formed a partnership with the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts (UN-L) and the Lied Center for the Performing Arts to commission the renowned composer Philip Glass to write a Lewis and Clark piano concerto. Paul Barnes (UN-L School of Music) will perform Glass' second movement of the Lewis and Clark concerto, "Sacagawea", featuring Native American flute music and will be performed before the dramatization. R. Carlos Nakai, the premier Native American flautist in the nation, will perform the flute solo. The entire concerto will be premiered in September 2004 by the Omaha Symphony.
Immediately preceding the First Tribal Council dramatization, a grand entry will be held by members of the Otoe-Missouria tribe which is now settled in Red Rock, Oklahoma. "We feel it is very important to be a part of this commemoration," said Otoe-Missouria Tribe Chairman James Grant. "We want to reach as many people as we can."
